Wiki Wiki What?

I've been hearing the word wiki for years without actually knowing what the word wiki means. I thought it was like a discussion board, just faster.  By experimenting with them in and out of class, I've realized the many benefits of wikis. I can also see how I can implement them, which I was very doubtful of at first.  I mean, let's get real, I teach Math.

I can see creating wiki's for students to help each other with homework.  Often times, they get stuck and give up.  If they can post it on a wiki and get help with it, I feel that it may be more beneficial to my kids.  It would also be a way for students to get help without staying after school. My big goal for them this year is learning to study and form study groups.  They could even form separate wikis for their study group.  I'm super excited about this and I'm going to talk to the HHS TSpec to set it up.  Fingers crossed, it gets used!

  1. I'm so glad it's not just me that didn't know what wikis were really all about! :) :)

I think your HW help idea sounds cool. One thing I worry about as a mathie too, is how to have kids "show work" and such on it. They don't have math type or anything and sometimes it's pretty hard to explain your ideas in math through typing. Have you given any thoughts on how to work around that?

Good luck on getting it set up. Maybe there's something in Blackboard that you could use...?

  2. But how can we bring pizza to a wiki study group? Clearly a con. :)

  3. I love your homework help wiki idea! I do think kids would be more apt to listen to each other about homework problems/questions. With my 6th graders, I would be a little worried about them giving each other wrong information! :) I mean, it's not like that happens on the internet already, right?!

  4. Great idea! The comments respinding to your postsare all good points, but don't give up! I'm thinking that even if kids just post answers and agree or disagree, a valuable discussion will ensue. Maybe they don't know how to explain how they got their answer yet, but surely this approach will help them. What better way to gain an understanding! Go for it, Woman!!
